Accessories
When it comes to style there are many things I can do, but one of the things I forget to do is accessories. Which is quite evident as I don't really own any. When planning, I went out and did the normal thing of looking at a few pieces I could add to my collection. Sadly, like most of my tastes, the things I saw were expensive. I don't mean expensive by 2023 standards, I meant a couple hundreds expensive. Which made me just look at the little accessories I own.
Watches
It's a classic for men for a reason. I’ve always appreciated a good watch. I think it comes from granddad, as he was keen to show off a new timepiece had gotten for a steal. Which is why I grew to appreciate them. Sometimes I think my brother is the watch guy, which is kind of the reason why I didn’t have watches for the longest time. However, in my collection I have two watches I quite like.
The first is my Guess watch, which M got me for my 21st birthday. I remember getting it and think it was so fancy. It became a going out watch. Which meant, before I went to uni I used very little. However, I always made sure to take care of it, as I know it was an expensive piece. So much so, when the battery ran out the watchmaker I went to said he didn't want to touch it as it needs a very delicate item to not crack the glass. These days I don't really wear it, but I won't part with it for sentimental value. But occasionally I will wear it when I feel like it might be nice.
The watch I do use is my Apple Watch. I know some people don’t like them, but for me it does so much to help me out in everyday life. It’s just an extension of my phone. But I like the versatility of it. I like the fact I can change the bands to suit the occasion. I had a leather strap I would use when I would go to work or dress up to make it not seem like a fitness tracker. I have pride band I wear during pride month, or when i going to a LGBT+ event to make sure people know. Recently I have been looking at other bands i could have in stock to match outfits. The only issue is, since the watch does so much, I don't use the others I have. I think sometimes I think about getting rid of it, but I like what it does for me as a person, and I think it's my most used accessory.
Jewellery
The thing with Jewellery, if you are not going to do it right don't do it at all. Which is why I only own like two pieces. As we established over twenty years ago, gold was getting old. When I look at jewellery I try not to look at anything gold. I feel it gives off chav vibes, but that could be just where I’m from. I like to look at silver and titanium. I wish i could afford platinum, if i could I’d have some much Jewellery made from it.
About twenty years ago my mum was insistent she got me and my brother some nice jewellery. I don't know why, so when a family member went on holiday where things are cheap she got my mum two gold bracelets. When I first got it, I liked it but since you weren’t allowed to wear it to school I never wore it. As such, I forgot about it till recently.
Since it's gold you might assume I don't like it any more. However, I do still like it, it's not a thick bracelet and since it's the only piece of gold I own it does make a nice contrast. Like most things I don't wear it often as I don't think it goes with a lot of the things I wear. I do think it goes nicely when I wear a nice shirt. Since I don't have to wear them any more, I don't really wear them. I feel next year I need to put it back into rationing and then see how I feel about it. But I get annoyed with it when I’m working out.
The chain I currently have was a nice gift from my mum a few years ago. It’s a simple silver necklace. It’s always invisible making it somewhat understated. Which I like. It goes with a lot of what I wear. The main reason I wanted it was the dog tag. The tag is something I picked in a sex shop in soho. When I first saw it I liked it, but I always knew I just liked the tag rather than the chain. As it was just a beaded piece of metal. Which is why I wanted the chain to make something. Which is why now I feel like it is something, rather than the nothing I felt it was before.
This too like my other piece is something I didn't really wear much. However, this year I’ve gotten into putting it on more. To make it more of an everyday item rather than a rare piece. I like wearing it around and having the pride colour out, so when people see it, some people smile. Or I’ve had people give the thumbs up. I wear because I like while at the same time it's making a statement. You should know whatever you wear, you should be making some statement about your personality, even if no one gets it.
I feel like if you don't own a few accessories here and there your look can be a little flat. I didn't used to think that so not too long ago, but now I do. I can see by just adding a little something, it can make you stand out or give a little contrast to what you are wearing. what I’m going to do, I’m going to continue to look for something i can add to my collection. Get a few everyday items, and do what so many people do, and save some things for a special occasion. But when is there truly a more special occasion than everyday life?
