STAN
Dear Friends,
This post is coming a little late honestly, as it was meant to be part of last season. However, if you do follow me religiously, you’ll know I did a post about Boys Love BL, under the banner STAN. Now let me go back and talk about what these kinds of posts are going to be, if you can’t figure it out.
Like many of my ideas, they don't originate from me. This particular post was going to be a one off. As one of my students saw one one my folders which had BTS on it, he went to me, ‘Do you stan them sir?’ to which I said, ‘I do,’ not releasing what the hell he was talking about. I googled it, and I was like, oh yes I do know this word, it's just not in my vernacular. Then I started to think about all the things I am a fan of, and I was like I can make a post out of that. Then when I got to thinking about it, there are so many things I am a fan of, that I kind of felt like it could be something I could talk about on a more regular basis.
The question I needed to ask myself was what am I a fan of? Of course a couple of things jumped to my head immediately, like games for instance, but then I thought it was a little bit too broad. So then I thought about it in a little more narrow terms. What game series do I like, what genre of games do I play? That kind of thing. Then I did the greatest thing, and I asked a few of my friends what they think I like. What I got was “Gaming, writing, bright colours”, and then when I posed them the same question, “Travelling” and “Crime documentaries”. When I got all this information it all gave me an interesting idea to think about. I then decided to do some innermost deep thinking about asking myself what are some things I truly am a fan of. Some of them I thought were quite obvious, but maybe that’s just me knowing me.
For me I think the ideal fandom is when something gets a nice cross media thing going. For instance I like when a book I’ve read becomes a movie, then I get a soundtrack, and other books about the production, or other stories in series. Or when a game gets an artbook, some novels to flesh out the world. Then there is a whole tonne of other merchandise with it. As I heard someone say before, I like to suck up as much of a thing as I possibly can. Even if that means owning something four times over because, reasons. Leave your guesses below.
One of the things I do know, people do say the idea of being a fan of something is going on from the idea of a company exploiting our youth. I know we are currently living in a reboot cycle, but a lot of the time I can be a fan of the new stuff and the old stuff. For two reasons, one it gives me more of a thing that I love. Two it also gives me a chance to get things I might have missed out on as a child or similar. While sometimes, I do become a fan of something completely new. Which can be something I can enjoy as an adult, and explore in a non nostalgic way.
As much as these series of posts are self serving, it will allow people to understand me a little better. However, one thing people didn't pick up on was my top five stans, and I wonder if any of you know what they could be. So stick around and see what other things I am a fan of, and if you would recommend anything to me.
