Music
Dear Friends,
Once upon a time I thought I would never tire of music. I thought I would keep up date with the charts, and always know what the new songs were. Boy how does time change. These days I couldn’t even tell you what was number one last week, or a last year. Who some of these new artists are. I am very much a person who now listening to music to: work out, read or drown out the sound of other people. Let me tell you, a lot of the music I listen to isn’t the same any more.
For me now music is just background noise, or something I put on to remember a long time ago. Some of the music I’m still listening to, most of which is over 20 years old now. Which to me, makes me feel so old, and at the same time makes me feel so weird. It makes me feel weird because time keeps on moving, but I can still like the same things. With the music I listen to though, sometimes it genuine surprises me when I look up the year a particular song came out. A lot of the time I am think this song is only 3/4 years old. Then to only find out is has been 5 or more years. One of the playlist I look at on Spotify is my birthday playlist, which now is five years old. In turn some of those songs, are older than that. Which brings me to something I’ve realised, I like old stuff now.
Recently in the last four or five years I have jumped back in time with listening to music from the 80’s and 70’s. I have been listen to disco, which isn’t so random as people think. Also, disco isn’t dead btw, it just exists in in different forms, just like dance music.
Ahh the early 00’s, haw a lot of dance tracks back in the day I couldn’t stand. However, as I got older I started to like dance music. Then I decide to go back a bit, and now I have a bunch of dance music from the late 90’s which I love listening too. It’s so surreal to grow older, to enjoy music of my past. What is even more eye opening, I wonder if everyone has done this or started to do this. Have you started to listen to the things you parents did. I have, not everything. When I used to work for a record company, I took look at my mum’s record collection. I saw a lot of things I recognised, and a lot stuff I had. Which I hadn’t realise where I had heard it first. Which is interesting to me.
Many would know, the only new music I keep somewhat up to date with is K-Pop. Which I’m not going to go into too much detail about, it rightly deserves it’s on STAN post. But honestly, I am not keeping up to date with new groups and singles. I am keeping up my favourite bands (BLACKPINK IN YOUR AREA!). This year though I am going to rededicate to myself to the sound, and see what some of the new trends are. While also catching up with some of the bands I was fan of.
One thing you might be surprised by is, I have been listening more to soundtracks of things. Not like musical soundtracks, even though they are a favourite. I mean like soundtracks to movies, which isn’t odd I do have a degree in film. It has been nice just listening to them, and in some cases I listen to them and write to. It just makes me feel like I am living in a movie of my own life. What none of you should be surprised to hear, 85% of the time I am listening to video game soundtracks. As now there more readily available, it’s nice to listen too. I particularly like it when I am reading. when I am listening to some to workout, Sonic songs make me want to run fast (for some reason).
For me music used to be a way I would escape. Now a days it’s something I truly have to consider. When I cook dinner, when I go the gym. I no longer know what I am in the mood for. I don’t know if this a factor of getting older, or just a change in taste. I do wonder if anyone of you are like me. I know I should keep up with the kids, but I just can’t be bothered.
Let me know if you musical tastes have changed, if you only listen to older music, or if you are now listening to a new genre of music. As for me, I am going to listen to the No Time To Die soundtrack, truly has some great pieces.
