Addicted To Base
Dear friends,
Some time last season I told you about how I listen to music, and how my music taste has pretty much plateaued. Ironically, a few weeks after that post went live, I realised I did like something. I noticed I was starting to really get into drum and bass; then I remembered, I also love hearing my sub breaking down the walls.
It shouldn’t be surprising to some people, as I have been into EDM for a long time. More than that, I am a big believer that dubstep isn’t dead; even when I had one of my 16 year old students ask me, “what's dubstep?” That hurt. However, just like techno, it's still around; you just have to look in the right place.
As for my new found love for D&B it hasn't come out of nowhere. I started to Listening to Fred V and Grafix a few years ago, and I was only a fan of a few of their songs. As time went on, I heard a few of their songs while playing Forza Horizon, and I was like, I like this! Then I went down a rabbit hole of finding other artists, and liking even more. Now I am constantly blasting D&B tunes.
However, there is one sad downfall to all of this. About five years ago I got rid of my big bass speakers. Those of you who knew me in my uni days, you know these speakers well. This was when I really was getting the room shake. Now they are gone, I don’t have the kind of speakers to make my addiction really kick. Which is a shame in a way, because I think I've noticed something.
I don't know if it’s me, but I feel like my phone has gotten quieter. I don't know if this is Apple’s doing, or a Spotify issue, but I've noticed a real lack of rumble in my ears of late. I know a few years ago Apple did lower the output in an update, and it makes me wonder if they are still doing it to this day. Or maybe it could be that digital is finally failing my old ears.
One thing I am going to try to use is the old Hifi system. You know the one we used to have 20 years ago. The one you properly got rid of, but I'm glad my mum didn't. As this would be a good way to really test the base. It's been over five years since I've used it, and I hope they still work just like I remember them. As I really need to have something that pushes the tempo, and give that big fat bass!
Which brings me to why I wanted to write this post. Things are not the same anymore when it comes to audio. I’m hardly the audiofile, but there is a serious lack of genuinely good speakers on your high street. I remember the days of flipping through the Argos catalogue, and having pages of speakers, hi fi’s and CD players. Now nothing. Which is why it's sad that I never took up this interest when I was working at my old job, as they sold this kind of thing. Maybe, it could be due to the fact, I didn’t have the £300 pound for a pair of Yamaha speakers. Sadly, it goes with that old adage, you get what you pay for. Which is why, it's strange why my Beats Solo have gone from power house too, meh.
Like always, when I do a post about something I can link to music, I love making a playlist. Which I have done for this post. The only thing is, it has been so annoying, finding out if the songs I have found, old and new, are full of that base! I remember some of them being so, hopefully if you’ve got something powerful, you can get back to me. As for the songs themselves, it's a mix of dub, D&M, jungle and deep house, all from various sources. It was something that just grew and grew. As of time of writing I don't know how many tracks it is. (Editor FabEs here it 45!)
Thank you for sticking with me about this random post. I am still very much unsure why I need to have heavy base lines in my ears. Or why do I need the whole street to hear the dirty base? Or why when I put tracks like these on at the gym I just zone out, and go HAM! All I know is, I am totally addicted to bass.
