Fujoshi, Ukkari Gei ni Kokuru

Fujoshi, Ukkari Gei ni Kokuru

After watching a bunch of Japanese and Korean drama, I finally started to delve into the LGBT+ themed dramas. Where I watched this beautiful gem Fujoshi, Ukkari Gei ni Kokuru.

Fujoshi, Ukkari Gei ni Kokuru 腐女子、うっかりゲイに告る (What She Likes) 8 Episodes

This eight-episode drama tells the story of Jun Ando who is a gay teenage in Japan, who runs into a classmate buying some BL (boys love) manga. From there the two form a bond, and then eventually he ends up dating her, to try and ‘fix’ himself to be normal. While also he is carrying on an affair with a married man.

The story goes deep here, which I can’t go into without giving major spoilers. The series is one which deals with bias, stereotypes, friendship. While delving deeper into LGBT+ issues such as, HIV status, suicide, and internalized homophobia. While there is, one instants of implied rape, in one scene.

Throughout the series the acting is great, from our lead Daichi Kaneko. He can give the audience the feelings and emotions needed for us to understand what he is going through. While also out female lead Ryoko Fujino is also good as the young innocent girl. With all the other actors playing their parts well, from young horny teenagers, to the Japanese lesbian with a British accent.

As for the soundtrack of the series is, top notch. As the series soundtrack is heavily reliant on the songs of Queen. The reason behind this is Jun has grown to become a great fan of Queen and Freddie Mercury. The series does something, which I am notorious for, and that’s taking a song as an episode title, and theming the episode around the song’s ideas.

The music is a main theme within the series, as to is a lot of parallels with Jun and Freddie. As there is a lot of talk about Freddie’s early life, which seems to be directly influenced Jun motives. Such as being in love with a woman, but not wanting to actually be with her. Which is an interesting concept.

Overall, all I think Fujoshi, Ukkari Gei ni Kokuru is a great series. It not an easy watch, but it’s a watch if you are fan of LGBT+ dramas. While watching you will understand what it is like to be a gay name in Japanese society. While also allow you to see how much better some of us have it than others. However, it doesn’t mean the series ignores this, but also has a nice message for the views to encourage change.

The only thing I would say that I didn’t like about it, it was the series length. After that final episode there isn’t any more, which is a shame. Unlike other series that might get a second this didn’t, it just ended. Which is the only downer, as I would have like to see how his life turned out after starting university.
