Top 5 Nintendo 64

Top 5 Nintendo 64

I’m a 90s kid so for me the Nintendo 64 holds so many memories. It was the first console I got for myself. Many of my friends also had one. It did come at the time when the PlayStation was out, so it got bit overshadowed. However, no matter how much it got put in second place; doesn’t mean it wasn’t a fun machine. As so many friends had one, and it had four controller ports, there was no stop of fun to be hand.

When I was coming up with this list, it was too easy to pick out good games on the system. Of course, the list started looking a lot like other lists, as many of the great games on the system are first party games. If you are reading my list and it seems a little bit of a cliché there’s not much I can do about it. This list might seem a little predictable, but neither of the Zelda games won’t be on here. I have never played the games on the 64, but it is on my list, if it gets another re-release.

Here’s my top five Nintendo 64 Games.

At number five there is a joint entry, maybe I should have just had six entries, whatever. Five 1 is WWF Wrestlemania 2000 (I won’t get the F out). I know a lot of people might have picked one of the WCW games, or No Mercy. For me I’m going to go with the game I have two copies of, for some reason.

Back in the day, everyone was into wrestling. By extension we liked wrestling video games. I do enjoy this game as its game play was fast passed. It wasn’t as wooden as other wrestling games which came before it. Also, it had almost full motion entrances. While also have the dumbest block animation, but great sound effects.

Five 2 goes to Super Smash Brothers. The original game in the series, and yes, I was one of very few people to play the original game. If you played Smash Bros you get it. This was the starting point for the series. As such, twenty odd years later its game play is a bit slower, clunkier and small character roster. This doesn’t stop it from being fun.

When you think about this game, you can let Mario smack around his own brother. While also it being a very different kind of game to play, compared to your regular fighting games. Overall, I really enjoyed the game, and glad the series is still going.

Lylat Wars or Star Fox 64 elsewhere, is a lovey on the rail’s shooter. Which was pretty cool, as the main story is something I have played repeatedly. So much so, I know so much of the lines of the games. I mean, “do a barrel roll”, is iconic for a reason. While realising how much of dick Falco can be.

I like this game because it’s swinging space opera. With lovely music, rememberable characters, and no stop action. White a multiplayer, that allows you to dog fight it out with you friends. It just a shame that any of the star fox games that have come since aren’t as fun. Zero was fine.

If you didn’t see this coming, what’s wrong with you? Seriously though Mario Kart 64 takes up the middle of this list. As you know it’s Mario Kart. The first 3D Mario Kart, and it had four players, and you have so many challenges. To say the amount of fun I’ve had with this game is numerous. Even till today, I will still play a coupe rounds of it, because it was just so good.

Once again, the multiplayer is where it’s at with this game. If you wasn’t doing grand Prix’s, to see who the best racer was. It was playing the battle mode. Big Donut, block fort, which ever you picked it was just so much fun to have. Learning how drift and racing around on Wario Stadium. This is such a great a great game.

If I was to be honest, I don’t know how many times I have completed Super Mario 64. I know I have it three different times, on three different platforms, but its still a great game. As it was the first proper 3D Mario is till does a lot of things right that some games today still don’t get right. Like many other guys this started a great foundation that has only gotten better with time. Still doesn’t mean I’ve gotten all 120 yet, don’t worry I will soon.

Weirdly enough this is the only game on this list that is single player. The fact that is so high on the list also speaks to its quality. Doesn’t mean that I have played this game with friends though, as many helped me complete the game. Just a shame that Luigi mode was never true.

Just like any other Mario game the game play is top notch. The soundtrack is just so memorable, every piece of music from this game has place in my heart and memory. While enjoying the unusual Mario power ups. While it was the only game where Mario has, he’s sweet breakdancing move.

Honourable Mentions.

Some mentions go out to some of the games where I have played, but not played enough. A shout out goes to Wave Race 64, a lovey race series that hasn’t had an entry in years. Lastly, you wasn’t a kid in the 90s if I wasn’t into Pokémon. Another mention goes out to Pokémon Stadium, that brought out Pokémon to the 3D.

Once again if you didn’t see this coming, you either don’t know video games, or don’t know me. Goldeneye 007 is by far my favourite Nintendo 64 game. As it was the game I got with my system, and it was the same one I got when I got a second one. Why do I love this game? For one, its James Bond, two it’s super fun and three its just great.

Being the first FPS on a console, and it did a lot for games. It was a great game experience, that gives a great movie to video game experience. Which is crazy when you really think about it. They showed the game industry how to do a multiplayer, as well other gaming first, which you can always investigate. I know some will say that by today standards it isnt Halo, but I still enjoy it.

Of course, I must talk about the multiplayer, which is crazy tit was an afterthought. When you think there is so many different game modes, like the man with The Golden Gun, and You Only Live Twice. Not to mention all the different characters from the entire series. Then of course you got stupidly silly game rules, like Slapper Only, and Rockets Only. One makes you die slowly, and one just makes you die so quickly. You need to have an no Oddjob rule.

Not to mention the game soundtrack, which I have listened to so many times. When I do, it makes remember every time I have played the game. The game is also enjoyable with its exaggerated voice overs, with the screams, and the slapping hands. While the references to the james bond universe, is a treat for any super fan. God I just love this game, just a shame the remake doesn’t hold a candle to it.
